Mercury Recycling, Recovery and Retirement

EcoCycle operates Australia’s only EPA-licensed mercury recycling facilities, providing national collection and processing for all mercury-bearing waste.

Our operations are designed to ensure mercury is safely recovered, refined, or permanently stabilised — in line with Australian regulations and international best practice.

Advanced Processing and Recovery

EcoCycle operates specialist mercury recovery, treatment and retirement infrastructure across Australia, including our mercury conversion facility in Kwinana Beach, Western Australia.

Mercury bearing materials are processed through controlled treatment systems designed to safely manage contaminants and support responsible environmental outcomes. Where mercury reaches the end of its useful life, it can be converted into mercury sulphide, a stable compound that significantly reduces environmental risk and provides a long term retirement solution.

These processes are conducted onshore at our licensed facilities, supported by ISO-certified environmental management systems and audited under state and federal guidelines.

Alignment with the Minamata Convention on Mercury

The Minamata Convention on Mercury is a global treaty adopted by the United Nations to protect human health and the environment from mercury pollution.

Named after the city of Minamata in Japan, the site of one of the world’s worst mercury poisoning incidents in the mid-20th century, the convention commits participating nations, including Australia, to reduce mercury use, emissions, and release into the environment.

Under the Convention, countries must ensure that mercury waste is managed in an environmentally sound manner, with strict controls on recycling, trade, and long-term storage.

EcoCycle’s recycling and retirement programs directly support these commitments by providing onshore, compliant, and fully traceable mercury management solutions, preventing the release of mercury into the environment and reducing the need for international waste export.

Supporting National and Global Progress

Australia continues to participate in global discussions on mercury management through the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Minamata Convention. This is an international forum where member countries meet to review progress, set priorities, and agree on global actions to reduce mercury use and emissions.

EcoCycle actively supports these efforts by sharing technical insight and demonstrating the capability of Australia’s recycling industry to meet long-term mercury collection and retirement needs domestically.

Our goal is to ensure that mercury already in circulation today is safely managed for generations to come, and that Australia remains a leader in responsible, onshore recycling.
