Mercury Retirement Plant

The Mercury Retirement Plant is the final stage in EcoCycle’s mercury management process, designed to ensure that mercury which can no longer be used is permanently stabilised and safely stored. This system provides Australia with a secure, onshore solution for the long-term containment of mercury in line with international environmental standards.

HOW IT WORKS

The Mercury Retirement Plant

The Mercury Retirement Plant applies a chemical conversion process that transforms liquid mercury (Hg⁰) into a stable, non-toxic form known as mercury sulphide (HgS), the same mineral structure found naturally in cinnabar ore.

The process involves:

Feeding and Mixing

Recovered mercury is combined with a stabilising agent in a controlled, enclosed system.

Chemical Conversion

Mercury reacts with sulphur to form solid mercury sulphide.

Dehydration and Solidification

The resulting material is dried and compacted into a stable, solid state.

Packaging and Containment

The converted mercury sulphide is sealed in approved containers for safe, long-term storage or disposal under EPA-regulated conditions.

All operations take place in a fully enclosed environment with continuous monitoring to ensure compliance with EPA, UNEP, and ISO standards for mercury waste management.

Environmental and Regulatory Compliance

This process eliminates the environmental risks associated with storing or exporting elemental mercury. By converting mercury into an insoluble mineral form, the Mercury Retirement Plant ensures there is no vapour release, leaching risk, or potential for reconversion under normal environmental conditions.

The system complies with the Minamata Convention on Mercury and UNEP technical guidelines for the safe treatment and stabilisation of mercury waste, supporting Australia’s commitment to reduce global mercury emissions and phase out unsafe storage and trade.

National and Global Significance

Before the establishment of this facility, Australia relied on international treatment and disposal options for retired mercury. The Mercury Retirement Plant provides a fully onshore solution, reducing export dependency and ensuring that mercury waste is treated responsibly within Australia.

By operating this technology locally, EcoCycle closes the mercury lifecycle, from recovery and purification to permanent conversion and retirement, making Australia self-sufficient in managing one of the world’s most challenging waste materials.
